Atretic encephaloceles or myelomeningoceles are frequently solid due to hamartomatous proliferation of fibrous tissue and blood vessels. Because of the fibrous nature of the tumor with no cystic cavity and unusual location with no connection to CNS, they are frequently regarded as insignificant hamartomas.

Frontal encephaloceles are more common in Southeast Asia. Atretic cephalocele is a degenerative form of encephalocele, which is detected as a cystic mass in the head, primarily in infants. Its presentation and prognosis vary and depend on various factors • Cephaloceles are typically herniations of brain tissue with meninges (encephalocele) or meninges only (cranial meningocele) through a congenital skull defect, and they are classified among “neural tube defects.” • They are categorized according to the site of the skull defect. Atretic cephalocele appears as an unimportant and benign lesion.

Atretic parietal cephaloceles (APCs) are involuted cephaloceles consisting of dura, fibrous tissue, and dysplastic brain tissue. They are typically sporadic and have a more favorable prognosis than true or noninvoluted cephaloceles.

Atretic cephaloceles (ACs) (also known as meningoceles manqué) represent 37.5% of all types of cephaloceles. 1 They are abortive rudimentary cephaloceles, benign malformative lesions consisting of meningeal and vestigial tissues (arachnoid, glial or CNS rests).
